The Northern Ireland Branch of the British Psychological Society has been the local forum for psychologists in Ireland since 1956. Membership is free and automatic to BPS members with an address in Ireland. The branch organises a range of events throughout the year including public lectures and ‘Flavour of Psychology’ career days for A-level students. They also hold an annual multidisciplinary conference that is well attended by postgraduates as it provides a relaxed and supportive environment for a first oral/poster presentation. The branch also supports postgraduate training workshops in conjunction with the local universities and other postgraduate organizations. The most recent one held in 2010 covered the topics of Structural Equation Modelling, Teaching in Small Groups, Getting Published and Careers. My role is to attend the branch’s monthly committee meetings to provide a voice for postgraduates in the running of the branch.
About me:
The title of my PhD is ‘On the Relationship between Intelligence and Attentional Control: Individual Differences in Cognitive Chronometry’. Using reaction-time paradigms and modelling, I am specifically looking at inhibitory control- the ability to ignore salient distracters and focus attention on task requirements. Beyond the PhD, my interests include psychometrics, metacognition and strategy use. I am also an avid user of E-prime. To contact me, please email me on pwilson23@qub.ac.uk
