Ethics teaching and approval; views from UK postgraduates

The survey has been set up by the ethics representative for PsyPAG (Psychology Postgraduates Affairs Group), Kirsten Bartlett, in collaboration with PsyPAG and the BPS (British Psychological Society) ethics committee. The BPS ethics committee is embarking on a review of current practices in the teaching of ethics in UK Psychology departments and is developing a new Code of Human Research Ethics. The outcome of this survey, in conjunction with the BPS review, will inform the work carried out in this area by the BPS ethics committee and PsyPAG.

If you are currently conducting research or have experience of being taught ethics and applying for ethical approval we would like to hear your views.

I am on doctorate course in clinical psychology. I seem to have had a smoother ride than some of my peers, although the lenghtiest part of the process was going through the University ethics commitee, before i could seek NHS approval, which was a very quick and efficient process. My advice would be to satrt earlier than you think. the electronic IRAS form was excellent and was good at explaining what detail they wanted.

I’ve recently been through the horror of the NHS ethics approval system – like the previous commenter said, my advice is to start early – months earlier, if you can.
